I have been many, MANY things in the past 10 years – student, stage manager, assistant, barista, bagel shop worker, secret shopper, electrician, roadie, wedding planner, event coordinator, hotel sales manager, retail manager, goal coach, and entrepreneur. Add to that – sister, daughter, cousin, granddaughter, niece, neighbor, friend, associate – and my resume gets pretty full. I was talking with this super-rad dude, David (who is also my uncle) and I realized that there are MAJOR correlations in everything I have done.
1) People – theatre, coffee shops, events, retail, oldest of four kids. people, people, people
2) Planning – it takes a bit of coordination to make a theatrical production, a wedding, a hotel, and a retail store run
3) Managing – stage manager, event manager, salesmanager, store manager, business manager
It takes a little bit of everything I’ve ever done to get me to where I am now.
In other words: “No great thing is created suddenly.” -Epictetus
It’s all intertwined in a crazy, mixed up, can’t-understand-what’s-happening-but-something-is-happening kind of way. My own father majored in Criminal Justice in college and spent his (almost) entire working life as a sales manager for various food companies. BUT, he and my mom raised 4 children and I am POSITIVE that his training in law and punishment came in handy there. My friend Judy worked as a Production Manager for many years and we all thought she would retire at that theatre …… nope. She is happily working away at a financial firm. Where did she pick up the nack for numbers? Managing budget after budget in the theatre biz. Mix and match.
What’s your list of job titles, duties, roles along your path? Where do they link up? Send it my way – I’d love to see the connections this crazy universe comes up with.
