Welcome to the How They Do It Series! In my never-ending quest to break down barriers and show entrepreneurs that there is no one way to do things (no, really, there isn’t a formula, friends), I’m teaming up with some savvy business owners to show you exactly how they do – day in day out, the costs, the challenges, and the major wins.
Grab a cup of tea or a mojito or whatever you need and cozy up to this behind the scenes peek at how one business owner makes it happen. Ready? Let’s go!
What’s your name and what do you do?
Hi there! My name is Simi Botic & I am a corporate attorney turned holistic health coach. I help women learn to nourish their bodies & nurture their lives, so they can live fully! I am the co-founder of Finally Free Program, co-host of the Boss Babe’s Guide, barre instructor at Studio B Wellness, & creator of The Micro Harvest!
How long have you been in business?
I left my law practice to devote 100% of my time, energy & love to my coaching biz on January 1, 2015.
What is your day like? (Hours you typically work/ how the day flows)
There is no such thing as a typical day, but I have tried to create some sort of rhythm for myself. Mondays are devoted to writing blog posts, newsletters, and any other copy for the business. I also update all of my accounting on Mondays so I never fall behind. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays are client days!
I typically begin seeing clients at 7:15 AM and end around 6/6:30. Fridays are the catch-all days where I do everything else I didn’t get to, set up in-person meetings, and typically devote a few hours to working with my business partner Paige Schmidt on our virtual intuitive eating program Finally Free. Throughout each day I use small breaks to respond to client emails.
I also try to workout in the late morning (if possible) as it is my favorite time to move, so that usually looks like a break from work from 9-10 for a barre class! On Monday and Wednesday nights I also teach barre at Studio B Wellness.
What do you do first thing in the morning?
Right now, go for a walk! My husband and I have gotten into taking early morning walks (around 6) for an hour. We go with the dogs or just us, and usually end with an iced coffee. I have become obsessed with our morning ritual.
What is the last thing you do at night?
A full on snuggle fest in bed with my husband and our two dogs, Harry & Ollie. It is my favorite time of the day because it feels like we are on an island where nothing bad can happen. I always take a cup of iced water with magnesium to bed with me to sip during this time. It helps me unwind & relax!
How does your work time start?
Emails! I always start with email because it feels so good to clear out the inbox and get an idea of what is ahead. It is also (for me) an easy way to get into work-mode.
How do you end your work time?
I write a to-do list for the next day so I feel organized. Then, I leave my computer upstairs in my office as a reminder to unplug. I have to REALLY need to do something for work to walk back up those stairs 😉
How many hours each week do you work?
This is tough because it can vary greatly. However, if I had to pick an average I would say 50-60 hours a week.
Where do you work?
From my home office & various coffee shops around Columbus!
How many products do you offer (physical or electronic)?
Currently I offer one product: Finally Free Program, the virtual intuitive eating coaching program I co-created with my amazing partner and friend Paige Schmidt. This January we are launching a custom planner, the Finally Free Master Planner, too!
How many services do you offer?
I currently offer 2 levels of coaching: (1) Nurtured Body + Nourished Live, my one on one 6 month program & (2) Finally Free Program, my virtual health coaching program that I mentioned above .
Do you have a team? If so, how many people and what do they do?
For my coaching business & blog, my team consists of my two dogs, Harry & Ollie, who do very little to help out. Perhaps I should fire them? 😉 For Finally Free, Paige and I do it all together!
I also work with The Wonder Jam on all things website related (they are AWESOME).
How much money do you spend annually on your own education?
So far this year I have invested close to $18,000 in my own education and coaching. I believe it is SO important! It is a reminder that my personal growth and wellbeing are valuable assets.
Do you invest in yourself in any other way?
Absolutely. I invest in myself with my food choices, exercise, connecting with the people I love, rest, play, journaling, prayer, and trusting my intuition when I make choices.
Do you take vacations? How many/often?
I absolutely do! I love taking vacations. I travel to visit friends or family at least one weekend a month and take 2-3 longer (7- 10 day) vacations a year.
Does anyone else weigh in on your business choices? (A coach, partner, etc.)
I have people who I share ideas with and who help me process my thoughts. These people include my coach, my husband, my best friends & family, God, and my business partner Paige.
Do you have a plan to grow your business more? Why or why not?
Heck yes! Paige and I plan to grow Finally Free Program into an epic community of women from around the world. We want to connect with as many women as possible, helping them to feel fantastic, healthy, and free in their lives & bodies. Isn’t dreaming the best part of entrepreneurship? Also, I would also love to be on The View or a similar show someday… 😉
What do you love the most about the way you run your business?
Everything in my business comes back to how I want to feel. I make all of my choices from a place of “does this make me feel the way that I desire to?” I want to feel fulfilled, passionate, peaceful, connected, and above all, I want to feel authentic in the work that I do. Running my own business means that I get to choose where to invest my time, efforts, and resources. At the end of the day, my favorite part about the way I run my business is that I stay true to me.
What is your definition of success?
Living with authentic purpose.
What advice do you have for someone starting their business today?
I would tell her that (1) it is ok to go slow! You have permission to take it one step at a time. There will always be more things you can and will be able to do, but you don’t have to do them all right now. Don’t let the things you don’t have “ready” in this moment keep you from starting now, & (2) please don’t compare yourself to other people. This is YOUR business, and only you can do it the way you are meant to do it. So don’t waste energy or emotion trying to be someone else or feeling badly that you aren’t more like some person you follow on Instagram. Just do you & it will be right.
