Eat the Frog Legs First
There’s always something that just sits there, staring you in the face, something you don’t wanna do at any hour. Do it first. Get it out of the way. Your mom used to make you eat your veggies first for many reasons. Take that lesson to the next level and do the thing you don’t want to do first.
Reward Yourself
Sometimes it’s fun to make a game of this thing called life. I like to save a super fun and creative project for the last thing on my list every day. Getting thru the rest of the work to get to that project helps me stay on track….and 92% of the time I get that other work done faster.
Don’t Do It
That’s right. Just don’t do it (for a limited amount of time). Go enjoy brunch with your friends on a Saturday morning, THEN clean your house. Read a chapter of that book you’ve had on your nightstand for months, THEN crank out your next newsletter. Distracting your mind and engaging in another activity can stimulate efficiency and creativity for the rest of your day. But let me repeat this again: do not delay all day. Do the work, just do something else first.
Time Challenges with Friends
My biz bud Shenee Howard likes to throw daily time challenges out to buckle down on a project and get it done. They look like this:
Shenee: I need to do some writing! Who’s in for a time challenge? 30 minutes of focus on the :10?
Us: I’m in! Me too! Ready to rock!
Time challenges mean you turn off all distractions and minimize extra windows and buckle down. In fact, a time challenge is how this very piece was written. Thanks, Shenee.
Email Organization and SITS
Oh how I love an organized inbox. When everything incoming has a home, you don’t give in to overwhelm as easily. My personal favorite folder is one that the brilliant Alexandra Franzen dubbed Suck It ‘Til Sunday. My SITS folder contains newsletters I subscribe to, information on upcoming courses I’m taking, cool new web tools to know about, and pretty much everything that doesn’t directly involve one of my amazing clients. On Sundays, I snag an hour or so at the end of the day and go thru them. And if I don’t get to it? Onto next Sunday it goes!
Employ these tricks in your office, with your daily chores, and anywhere else they come in handy. Speaking of which, what do you find comes in handy most often when you need to GSD? Let me know in the comments below.
