Rookie mistakes happen to every, well, rookie. The important part here is to take responsibility for what you could control (your actions & your words are pretty much all you can list under the “things-I-can-control” category) and move forward. Put it out of your mind and do what you showed up to do.
2. You have a coach for a reason – listen.
Your coach (probably) believes in you more than you do. They have seen the blood, sweat, and tears you’ve put into this thing. And they’ve been there. That’s why they are the coach and you just get to listen and learn. Lucky you!
3. Take all the support you can get. Love your fan club as much as they love you.
Believe me, your people love you. Your family, friends, team, and people who haven’t even met you HAVE YOUR BACK. They will cheer for you even when you don’t want the cheers. Give them a little in return and hit ’em with your love and you’ll have a support system that will never let you fall.
4. If you expect to fail, you will.
This (super badass) girl said to me: “I told myself I couldn’t do it before I tried. And then….. well, I did exactly that – I didn’t do it.” She was talking about a lifting move but you can insert pretty much anything to the above situation. When’s the last time you told yourself you were going to fail and then walked right into that trap you set for yourself? Allthefreakintime.
5. Cheer for others – their success contributes to yours.
Get your pom poms out and rock it for those who do for you! Did your sister help you mail out 50 thank you cards for you latest set of clients? Get your grateful self to that tavern her 90’s rock all-girl band plays at on Thursdays. Best friend send you flowers for your big presentation? Gift that hot momma of three a mani/pedi date with you sans kiddos. Collective freakin’ win.
6. Get it on tape.
When you get a chance to see what you’re up to from another perspective, you can see soooo much. Watch the replays, learn where you went wrong and also note what worked really well. Repeat the good and throw out the bad. (and then delete that tape – I’m pretty sure there’s a reason technology changes so often and it’s so that we don’t have to re-live our past for eternity.)
7. Have fun – that’s why you’re doing it anyways!
Duh. If it’s not fun, why are you even in the game?
“Flying might not be all plain sailing, but the fun of it is worth the price.”
